The US and Afghanistan: History, War and Our Possible Future(s)

We are fortunate to have a SPEAKER for the November meeting!

William (Bill) Davnie is a retired Foreign Service Officer. He has served Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan's northern neighbor, Tajikistan, where he followed Afghan affairs, and has visited Afghanistan professionally. He has also served in Iraq, in 2007 during the surge, and has published articles on both Iraq and Afghanistan.

*******************************

Going forward with our MEETUPS, we decided that we need to have some "self-education" time. There are so many issues to tackle and the best way will be to do some of our own homework and then come to the Meetups, ready to really discuss the issues!! The two most burning issues right now seem to be the war in Afghanistan and Domestic Intelligence.

With respect to the war in Afghanistan, we'd like to spend the next meeting discussing its history, the origins of contact between the US and Afghanistan, the present "state-of-the-war", what are US and international "interests" in this country, what "interests" they might have in us, and possible future resolutions/outcomes for present conflicts.

Ultimately, we'd like to address the question : If President Obama was in the room with us right now, what would we counsel him to do? This takes personal knowledge on our part regarding the intricacies of the subject!

So, please hit your local libraries and the Internet to discover what knowledge YOU can bring to the discussion next time!

We also agreed that we will all search for a knowledgeable speaker on Afghanistan to join us. I will contact the folks at the Humphrey Institute and John will talk with people from the Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers about a speaker. All other suggestions and speakers are welcome!

Again, the topics for the next three months are:

November Afghanistan

December Domestic Intelligence

January Recap of the past two issues. This will afford people the time to revisit and reevaluate these two very important issues! In addition, since I (Fawn) will have been in France for a while at that point, I will try to bring you some perspectives from that corner of the world.

We also thought that it would be nice to start a Meetup for St. Paul and the East Metro. The St. Paul for Obama Group is still on MyBO which is now the Organizing For America site. It can be used if someone is willing to organize it.

Again, we agreed to have the November Meetup in St. Paul at the Mai Village Restaurant
November 10th, 7PM.

They have private meeting accommodations that are free if the attendees plan to dine - so tell your friends!

Dear Obama Meetup-ers!

At our next meeting, it will be almost one year since the exhilarating election of our Candidate to the Presidency of the United States!

So, let's take this moment to reflect on the campaign, to rediscover the energy we all had during that time, to reconnect with each other and to recommit to the principles and ideals that we helped to usher in 2008.

We have had a great many battles since then and NOW is probably the time to rejuvenate our purpose, redefine our goals for the coming year and to re-energize each other on this journey!

On that note, several members have asked that we have our next gathering at a re-staurant or coffee house where we can do just that. So, at our October meeting, we'll take the time to come together as a progressive family for change, to break bread, pass the wine so that we might re-emerge victorious

(BTW, if you can think of any other words that begin with "re" that could define where we are right now and where we want to go - please feel free to have at it!! lol !!)

Therefore, our October meeting will be a dinner gathering

~ at The Good Earth Restaurant, in the Galleria

~ at 7:00 pm

We thought this would be a great place to gather due to the wonderful food and the bountiful parking.

Please let us know if you can come so that we can make reservations!

Health Care Discussion with Tom Lehman

We are very fortunate that Tom Lehman will be able to come to talk with us on September 8th about Federal Health Care Reform as well as about the Insurance Reform Components of the federal plans pending in the Congress.

Tom says that, "given Minnesota's insurance reforms enacted in 1992 and continuing reforms enacted since then, we have a unique perspective on insurance reforms."

I look forward to seeing you all on the 8th so that we can all benefit from this wonderful opportunity to talk with someone who is so directly connected to the issues. (Please See Tom's bio, below.)

This is an amazing opportunity that you won't want to miss!!!

Yes We Can!!

Part Two of the fantastic presentation and discussion that we started at the July Meetup.

There will probably be a change in our planned format for the August Meetup. We were unable to get any of the speakers that we had planned. However, this may be a good thing. Because we are dedicated to having discussions on the latest issue, we will still have Part II on Health Care Reform.

We will have a Round Table Discussion on the lies that being promoted about Health Care, also

the Town Hall disruptions

and what we can do about it.

Included will be a presentation by our special guest Joel Clemmer, a former administrator for Macalester College, and health care reform advocate. He is the chief author of the Minnesota Health Plan. Joel will take questions and be a part of the open forum.

Dear Fellow Obama Campaigners,

It's been an amazing ride - and we did it together! Tomorrow will change the world! But, it's not time to stop our efforts!!

I just got this message from the Keith Ellison Campaign offices. It reminds us that we have to keep working even in these last few hours! Then, tomorrow we can celebrate like it's the dawn of a new day! In fact, WE will have created this brand new day by being the change we want to see!!

So go GOTV and then ... Party!

Larry Weiss wrote:

"We are on the verge of an amazing victory – but we need every possible volunteer to make it happen. If you have not yet volunteered to Get Out The Vote on Election Day, please sign up now! You are the change you’ve been waiting for - so make it happen!

And Tuesday, after the polls close, join Keith at Trocaderos Nightclub, 107 3rd Ave N, Minneapolis, to watch the returns and party with 5th Congressional District campaigns.

If you are planning to go over to St. Paul for the big statewide DFL party, stop by Trocaderos on the way. If you don’t want to go any further than Minneapolis, Trocaderos is your spot. Either way, please join us.

Larry Weiss
Campaign Manager"

A critical part of our victory plan is our Voter Protection Program, which is designed to ensure fairness on Election Day. The campaign is currently seeking volunteers to serve as Designated Challengers inside polling locations throughout Minnesota on Election Day. These Challengers will work to advocate for the voting process, address problems that arise in polling places, and clarify voting rules if necessary.

We're joining with the Official Obama Campaign, who will lead this important Election Day Designated Challenger Training!

Hello Everyone !

Well, we’ve been doing a lot of good work lately by partnering with other grassroots organizations and these effort have gone a long way toward helping to get Barack Obama elected in November!

Now, it’s time for us to regroup and come together again as the ‘Obama for President Minneapolis Group’!!!

For this reason, I’ve secured a meeting for us at the Obama Campaign’s Official Minnesota Headquarters on August 29th at 6:00pm! We HOPE you’ll be there!

At this meeting we will be fortunate enough to have Mehdi Alhassani, the Regional Field Director for the 5th Congressional District, dialogue with us about a number of issues. For starters, he will give us:

1) Details from the Democratic National Convention in Denver;
2) A general Update on events and activities to date;
3) Info on ‘Camp Obama’, to be held Monday, September 1st;
4) Details regarding plans for the RNC Convention;
5) An inside look at ‘Team Obama’ in Minnesota and
6) So much more!

Again, this will be a great opportunity to meet the folks at Team Obama AND to reconnect with everyone in the ‘Obama for President Minneapolis Group’!!! We HOPE you all will come out for this important – and fun – meeting! Please tell your friends, family, neighbours and co-workers that they are more than welcome to join us! See you there!
